Whether you've never birded in your life or want to better your skills as a birder, this program is for you.  We will go over some of the basics of how to identify birds, what equipment and books to use and where to go.  After the program we will search and call for owls on the preserve. This program is recommended for adults and youth ages 12 year old and older. Limit 20 people.

Saturday, May 14, 2011     7:30 to 9:30am

Curtis Dykstra, Naturalist

$5 per a person

As a follow up to our Birding 101 class the night before, join experienced birder Curtis Dykstra as he leads participants on a bird hike through several different habitats on the preserve including the wildlife refuge section during the height of spring migration.  You are sure to see and hear a vast array of birds from the local Chickadees and Cardinals to migrant Warblers, Flycatchers and much more.  Bring your listening ears, your fullest attention and don't forget your binoculars too!  Limit 12 participants. Binoculars will be available to use if you need them. This program is recommended for adults and youth ages 12 year old and older.

Enrollment is on a first come first serve basis.

In the event that there is insufficient enrollment or other circumstances, Calvin College Ecosystem Preserve reserves the right to cancel.  If the programs are canceled we will refund registration fees.

What to Wear & Inclement Weather

Please dress for the weather and walking the trails. For the birding fieldtrip on Saturday it is recommend that you where long pants and close toed shoes as poison ivy is present in the refuge section of the preserve.  Birds continue to sing and fly about in the rain so unless thunder and lighting are present the class and fieldtrips will continue. If the weather is not great for birding outside we will adapt the program and offer it inside.
